Compost review

I am always looking for good compost , starting this year with Grow sure seed compost and after 2 weeks of using it found stones bits of twigs and things growing in it that not what I planted , trying to stay away from compost that has recycled waste in it but still things in it .

I have repotted my lulpins,Delphinium, Agastache and daphne in Wilkes coco coir Mixed with their Vermiculite.

i will stick with john Ines seed sowing compost for starting off new seeds but found the coir great for potting on.

not only is it very reasonably priced but it is so light I can just pick up a bag a £4 bag when I do other shopping in town.

Just discovered Jacks Magic Compost. It has a  lovely feel to it, looks as though there is a lot of sand in it. No lumps, uniform consistency. I will be buying more. Have only potted up dahlia tubers in it so far but this is going to be the compost for me this year.

Another vote for Jack's Magic Compost, it is very good and only £4.99 for 60L from b&m.

    Jacks  Magic, Scotdales 22 Feb 2015, £3 /60 litres, this year £4.99 /40 litres.

still my favourite but why such a huge price hike.

I would like to know good reliable peat-free composts.  The Aldi one I bought last year was very good.  Any others?  IMO it's really important to buy peat free as far too much habitat destruction occurs from the extraction of peat in Scotland and elsewhere. Please buy  peat free compost!

Jacks magic is made by Westland and although it is very good and on offer at 4 for 3 in wickes at the moment it is a peat based compost(probably why it is so good).

Jason and redwing I bought 20 bags of Wilkes own multi purpose last year to top off a new raised bed I put in and for the price it was fine.

if you want to avoid peat then avoid Wilkes best as that is 50% peat.

  • I too have been using Jacks Magic for years now on the recommendation of my daughter. I think it's one of the best I've ever used. For any permanent planting in containers it is in my opinion, the one to go for.  I've also found that My Dahlia and Begonia do best when planted into it as well.
