@ punkdoc - yes my husband loves the lawn to get mossy as he thinks it doesn't need cutting as much!

@ yviestevie - of my goodness, what a turnaround and a gorgeous lawn (not to mention the flowering features!). How long did it take you to turn it around?

@ Angela - good idea to get someone else to look at it/quote. Will have to see who else does it locally. We do have loads of lawns feed/weed products in the greenhouse but am a bit disappointed as aeration and treatment last year didn't seem to make any difference.

@ Obelixx - yeah pretty time poor with a new baby and a return to commuting job later this year. I'm happy to pay people to help but when we did this last year the aeration and lawn treatments didn't seem to make any difference which was really disappointing. I do love the idea of nourishing it back to life but am worried it will take ages. When we aerated we didn't add sand so will give that a go thanks! And we raked but didn't use a scarifier so perhaps I need to give it a more serious go. Might be a good way to get us out of the house each day for some vitamin D! :)

Hi folks,  Thanks for all your kind comments.  The before photo was taken in 2010 when we bought the house. The after photo was taken in 2016, so six years, lots of man hours and copious amounts of weed and feed.  All I do now is scarify it once a year and keep it mowed, Green Thumb do the rest.  It means I can spend my time on the seed sowing and planting which is the bit I loveimage  I have to say that the lawn probably took about 3 years to get right, then it was just maintaining it.

Even a poor 'lawn' can be improved with a bit of basic care. Weed and feed in spring  (and again through summer if necessary ) regular mowing, and some aeration will improve almost anything. Mine was pretty ugly when I moved here - mainly buttercups, daisies and dandelions. Compacted - mainly by local children who seemed to think it was theirs to run over at every opportunity, and mossy as it's north-ish facing. Within a couple of years it looked totally different.

I don't have young children though, so it doesn't get much abuse from footfall. It's certainly more of an issue if it's getting a lot of wear and tear.

Your garden looks superb Yvie. A lot of hard work's gone into it to get it looking that good though! image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

We have had Greenthumb for about the last 5 years, they're actually coming again tomorrow. It is a franchise and I would suggest you find out if there's a different rep in your area, as my fella has to come through the house to access my back lawn and he removes his boots at the front door and puts them back on at the back door, although I've never asked him to do so. I've always been very pleased with the results too.

  • Just had a phone call to ask if green thumb can come and scarify and treat my lawn. Is it too early?

    Thanks

I scarified my lawn yesterday. I did it the same time last year and didn't get any problems.
