Having a shredding fest - utility bills, old insurance gone.

I'm ignoring the herd of elephants in the room i.e. bank statements, but how long should I keep them?

In London. Keen but lazy.

Aren't you supposed to keep them for six years?  I think that's it.  I must have a shredding fest - loads of the Aged Ps' stuff to shred then loads of mine - it might almost be worth sending it to a data shredding company - I wonder how much they charge?

I've kept every bank statement and pay slip since I was 17 - that's 43 years - I've absolutely no idea why

Accountant brother says they should be kept for 7 years but more and more banking happens online now and I, personally, haven't had a paper statement for several years.

I scanned all of mine as they don't take up any room once they are in the computer. No need to buy a scanner nowadays of course,  just use a camera like the one in your phone and you can easily keep a permanent record.

I think HMRC asks for 5 years. Then mine go into the compost, torn, but unshredded.

For tax purposes the recommendation is up to 7 years.  Anything older than that can go.  I also had a shredding fest recently and then had to chuck the shredded paper into the non-recycling bin because our council won't accept shredded paper waste!  I didn't have a compost heap on the go at the time, but the mountain of paper would have been far more than I could add to compost anyway.
