You may be right purplerallim, but please don't stop putting out the hog food. He may feel hungry and venture out to look for it and imagine his sorrow when he finds none, let alone the energy he will have used up, it could be a matter of life and death just for the sake of 5 minutes of your time. I know we have had none visiting the dish for the past few nights but I still put the food dish out (just in case). If you start then you must be prepared to feed throughout the year.
Am in the process of getting rid of the rats that have come to the hog house, so food out is not possible at the moment.( And yes the hogs are safe before anyone asks) Unfortunately my hogs come during the night, after midnight, so leaving food out is not an option.
I totally understand and would not want to encourage the rats either. I bring my hog food in when we go to bed around 11.30 p.m., and we can see the dish during the evening through our glass doors. It is a tricky one purplerallim, and I don't have an answer, but I can just imagine how I would feel dressing up to go to my favourite restaurant only to find it was closed.
Thanks for your advice everyone regarding mealwormsome They don't go on the ground deliberately it's other birds feeding messily! Hopefully the big fella is hibernating properly now as it was minus 5 yesterday. If it gets milder will put some cat food out x
I have never eaten Japenese food but I feel for you purplerallim as this was obviously a great loss to you. We have a steady turnover of restaurants here, the latest to go was a top of the range with fantastic sea views.
To keep to the subject I am hoping that the 3 or 4 small hogs that we took to the rescue centre in the past few months will have survived, thrived and be returned to our garden in the Spring. None seen here for the past few days.
We don't have frogs, tadpoles or spawn in our pond, we don't have birds taking any interest in our dozen or so bird boxes dotted around the garden, however after feeding one hedgehog visitor all through the "winter", it has bought a mate to feed with it tonight and you should have heard the huffing, puffing and grunting going on just outside our French windows - it was far more lively and entertaining than any television programme on the box tonight!
