What time do they turn up @purplerallim ? You and @Logan4 are very lucky. Although OH spotted a hedgehog on our front lawn around midnight on Saturday, there has been no sign of any in the back garden. We had the camera set up facing the side gate "hedgehog highway" but only cats were spotted. Our hedgehog house has had no recent inhabitants either, but it's cleaned out, ready and waiting ๐ค
The camera was in a different place in the garden last night which is why it was a phone photo. The bigger one has been coming for a week or two now, usually from 8.45pm and is still around at 5.30am. During that time it seems to go all over the garden as last nights pictures show it ar the other end rooting around the greenhouse and shed. What is unknown is how it gets about as it only goes one way past the camera (9.15, 2.30 and 5.30) As the access is too high to climb,( even for a full grown hog) it would mean going out the gate and round the house and in under the gate the other end of the garden doing a loop around the house. It must walk miles.๐
Your little boxed feeding station certainly appears to attract the hogs @purplerallim but how do you prevent vermin from entering?ย Here our bowl of hog food & water is within our view (through glass doors) but when I am ready for bed I bring the food bowl inside. (around 11.30 p.m.). On the odd occasion I have left it outside the bowl is completely empty in the morning and I know it isn't hogs that have finished the food as they always leave crumbs and chewed up biscuits which I then give to the birds.
The only time I had problems with rats/mice was when we first put the hog house out near the fence and put food in it. We do have a bait box out now nearby the hog house and fence, but well covered in paving slabs ( which I kept watch on to ensure the holes were too small for hogs to get into) since doing this and moving the food into the middle of the garden we dont get any . Up until this month the food was in the open but thought it should be under cover for the winter after seeing what people do on here. So bought a cheep storage box and the hogs were in it the first night.๐ Can't bring it in as they feed from dusk to dawn.
We have had up to three hedgehogs at our feeding bowl recently, 1 or 2 large adults and 1 or 2 youngsters.ย I had never seen more than 3 at one time this year.ย However tonight I had such a surprise to count not 4 but 5 at the same time - four were small and one large one.ย I am delighted but also a little cautious to see the smaller ones - hoping they will fatten up before any cold weather arrives.ย I would have taken a photo of them but I could barely see them in the dark. We have 2 hog houses although they have never had visitors in them.
It seems my hog house is being used as a resting station between feeds, as there is no resident.ย Last night the same little hog came back three times in an hour to feed, and between used the house.๐
A hedgehog moved into our garden for the first time a week ago. I've been putting out a pouch of Felix chicken in jelly cat food each night since then. He visits the bowl about three times over the course of an hour to stuff whole lot in. Is this too much to be feeding him? I don't want to make him explode!
