Saw ours in the flesh as it were last night, right outside the back door. I was a little concerned as he did seem a bit small, but read that this morning and felt reassured. There's certainly nothing wrong with his appetite, the dish was licked clean(and a little "calling card" left in way of appreciation). :)

Thanks for the reminders AnniD and commiserations to folks for their dying ones. It is always sad.

Hedgehog pate made from real hedgehogs.... I'll get me coat....
At least you tried GuernseyDonkey and now know yours ain't a posh hog.
I hope yours will be okay purplerallim.

Ours has been a couple of times the last few days. The poops seem rather small and it is not the biggest of the two hogs we had last year. Not sure but it seems to be the same one?
Saw one last night making a dash across the front garden under the car and across the road. I think someone must be feeding it some performance enhancing stuff.
It visited twice early and late the other evening, and ate nearly all the (small dog) biscuit food last night. And left us some poop as a thanks...?

Going to buy a new crate today as the old one has gone brittle.
  • We added a new addition to our hog visitors last night as one was rescued from a busy road a little way from here.  We now have a Horace, a Matt, and a Hector, as well as a few others whose names just haven't stuck with us!
The pate I gave them wasn't pate made out of hedgehog - it was made for hedgehogs - it was one of my dafter ideas but hey ho.  Apart from that they normally eat Spikes, Wild Things, Chambers (?) or from under the bird table.  oh and chopped apple.

If anyone knows of a teacher at primary school, the link below has a lot of info re: educating young children about hedgehogs

Saw the hogs last night ( yes that's right plural first for me) and had to refill the food dish as they had nearly cleared it. What was interesting was one hog was still, being circled by the other and twitching when touched. This was significantly bigger than the other and I'm assuming a male, he lost interest and went to finish the food. The other took this opportunity to leave. He wandered around a bit and then set off in pursuit.  Maybe hoglets in the future,  I can hope.🙂
  • That does sound promising purplerallim - typical hog behaviour from what I have witnessed here.  We are also hoping for hoglets soon and my neighbour (who shares hogs with us) has witness an actual mating session a week or so ago!  I love seeing the youngsters coming here to feed (last year) and watching them grow, become more confident, and then eventually become the parents of another new batch of hoglets. They mate twice a year, but usually the babes take a year or two to mature into parents themselves.

I've only seen and heard the bigger one the past few days. He? has been in the feeder regularly and eaten most of the food, but in two goes. Around eight and again at eleven thirty or so.
I don't like to look too closely ours seem a bit skittish. Can hear them next to and through the door snuffling and sliding the dish on the slabs. I think it makes it echo in the plastic crate.
Sometimes they push it out of the crate.
I do not think they live in our garden, I think they just visit.
I would rather they didn't live here because of the neighbours cat, I guess they are spikey enough to be safe, but not so sure I trust it.

Mine are visitors, don't have a resident but have put out a house so hopefully....
Usually don't see mine as it is sometime after midnight when they come, that's why I was delighted to see them early on 10pm ish . I know the route they go as little poops across garden down path and under gate onto front garden. Hubby even disturbed one drinking from the bird bath out front night before last.

Hi everyone...I had a circling Hoggy the other night and thought love might be in the air, but the big guy gave up and toddled off.
