Daylight robbery indeed, needless to say I didn't buy any. Yes, we do have a B&Q aym, which I can get to fairly easily in the next few weeks, and I am sure they will be much cheaper there too. As I would like to start off with at least three plants, I was quite disgusted at the cost of each one. I ended up buying a couple of Heuchera as it seems their leaves stay true all year round, which is encouraging.
It's complicated and frustrating for us here in the Channel Islands. Islanders often travel to the u.k. with an empty car boot or van, cram it full with all the items that are either not available here, or are so very expensive to buy. Amazon has been a great boon for shoppers too. But imagine all the little shops here that loose their customers to Amazon, that is why I like to support local whenever I can, but there is a limit even for my patronage.
Our Astilbes grow in full sun, but are planted at the base a wall where it meets the patio, so it gets properly flooded when it rains. The one to the right of the picture is A. "Vesuvius", it has darker foliage with a red tint, and lovely deep red shoots. The one to the left of the picture was already in the garden when we moved here, so not sure which hydrid that is. We have divided them with ease.
Yes, they are gorgeous keenongreen, just the right colour for me, but with seed packets they mostly seem to be mixed colours and I really am not a pink lover, however the white is nice too, matches most other colours.
I am planning to grow the elusive astilbes near a wall, in partial shade, around our pond area.
