I do love a bit of lawn and the garden is so small that if i don't have grass there i wont have any. I don't think that i would be happy with artificial lawn and am thinking as a last resort i would put gravel down with a grass path. But i think i would like to try grow grass i am just not sure whether to dig the ground over where the tree is and to risk the grass drying out or whether to just leave that area as is and seed it. I do wonder if the loam there keeps the tree from sucking up all the water but equally don't want the lawn to sit in water in winter. I wonder if really long holes poked in the lawn with a cane would help in winter.
So many questions and i just don't know who to ask.
I'm in a similar position, though its my house that shades the front lawn. The sun doesn't get there at all in the winter and is only on the grass for a couple of hours in the evening. My turf is 2years old (new build) and is already mossy. I am going to try and resurrect it by scarifying and weed seed feed it but we'll see. Its not deeply shaded and quite bright so I'm hoping it will do. Adding to the problem is my poor draining clay
In your case I'd be tempted to dig it over and then water if necessary.
