Ah thanks folks. I feed mine with chicken manure pellets and also rose food. It does tend to get a little black spot on the leaves. I've been advised to spray it in early spring to prevent it.
Im pretty ruthless on pruning but it's done it no harm so far.
I'm making my front garden into a memorial garden, to enjoy and reflect on memories spent with my late Mum, Dad and Grandparents here. Part of this memorial garden is going to be a rose garden. The garden is South facing and is quite exposed to strong winds coming from the West. Soil - sandy loam, slightly acidic.
I bought my first rose last year just after losing my Mum. It's another Harkness rose, "Celebrating Life" (floribunda), and has done exceptionally well in my front garden in a spot that's slightly sheltered from the strongest winds. It is still covered with green, glossy leaves so hasn't really gone into dormancy here (S.E. Scotland)

I'm new to roses and know very little about them, but I bought a few bare root Harkness roses from Suttons very recently.
The 2 climbers I bought are "Susie" http://www.roses.co.uk/home/531-susie.html#
and "White Star" http://www.roses.co.uk/climbers/249-white-star.html#
