Roses for Rose Arch
Hello!
I'm about to plant a rose arch.
It's a south facing aspect, with clay soil. Tends to get a bit windy.
Would love a heavily fragranced rose, or two!!
Any advice on the best roses to choose would be much appreciated.
Anticipating buying them bare root soon.
Thanks
Sandra.

I'd prefer something pinkyish if possible, or cream?
But actually if a yellowish rose fit the bill a bit better then would be happy with that!
David Austin do repeat flowering rambling roses which would be easy to twine round an arch. They have Malvern Hills - soft yellow, Lady of the lake - soft pink and others. Have a look on their website.
David Austin rose The Generous Gardener is a pale coloured rose with good scent. Also, climbing Arthur Bell. The flowers are an intense yellow but they get paler as the flower ages and the perfume is gorgeous.
I had a beautiful Generous Gardener in my last garden. It was very strong and vigorous and covered 3 panels of trellis. I wouldn't have thought it supple enough for training on an arch.
I have a David Austin Shropshire lad and is good climbing rose
My GG was definitely a climber but too stiff and strong for a rose arch which needs more flexible stems so you can wind them about diagonally and horizontally to encourage more blooms.
Thanks very much for all your replies.
I'm in the process of researching the names you've given me.
Some of them seem to be suitable for shade, so not for me as it's a very sunny spot.
Once again, many thanks
Sandra.
Ah right.
Thanks for that Pansyface. Will have another look.
Sandra.
Hi Sandra100
Here is Madame Alfred Carriere which I planted in early 2015. The first photo is in June 2015 and the following photo was taken in June 2016 so you can see how quickly it grew. It is meant to be a white rose but the true colour is a sort of pale cream with a hint of pale pink / yellow. It is highly scented and easy to train. I really love it as it flowers on and on.
Hope you find the right rose for you.
Hi Sandra, i posted a thread on here last autumn, asking just the same question.....in the end i plumped for Princess Margarite, David Austin, check the spelling, she has settled in well and has buds now, i bought her in a pot and not bare rooted as didin't trust myself to keep her alive
David Austin roses come packaged beautifully, my husband and i planted her on christmas day, whilst his turkey was cooking, a nice memory. I put lots of compost in and a sprinkling of feed in with it, and watered her in. I haven't done anything else to her, fingers crossed. Let us know your choice and later in year we can post our beautiful arches
who knows ours may look as lovely as Tootles
