Aym, I'll dig out the pic of goldfinches on the verbena if I can. Might have a couple pics of jays too - there's an oak tree in a neighbours garden and we often see a pair (sorry).
I've only seen a jay once here, even though there is plenty of woodland a bird flight away. Was glad to see it and add it to my list (!), and it was beautiful ,but not sorry it didn't stick around, wouldn't want it here at nesting time!
I've got more goldfinches this year than I've ever had.
I had a hearts feeder that they wouldn't touch and after the sparrows disappeared in autumn the feed went mouldy despite there not being enough ports at the far end of the garden where they like to feed. Moved it of course but still have more mouths than ports.
Currently experimenting with moving the feeders about as there's a niger seed feeder close by they also won't touch. Converted it into a hearts feeder (of sorts) today. I'm trying to figure out if it's the conifer hedge or the bird table they don't like, or maybe it's too far from the flock? There must be a science behind it.
Been doing GBW with BTO for quite a few years get great pleasure from watching the antics of the song birds in the garden, found sunflower hearts the best for feeders and mixed feed without corn for ground feeders, at present the tits are in predominance, goldfinches don't like the way the tits dash back and fore to the berberis bush from the feeders, get doves, blackbirds, starlings, dunnocks, sparrows and odd nuthatch greater spotted woodpeckers chaffinches etc in their times, on the ground, where it is paved easier to keep clean.
Fairygirl lovely photo I really like robins, I have pigeons and doves and magpies on the feeding station main big feeder and robins, great tits sparrow
Thanks GGirl. I think he's the youngster I had inthe garden last year. He's 'chunky'
I love them too, although I've been very excited about having a pair of nuthatches which turned up in December. They're not very common in Scotland, and they've been visiting every day recently, so I'm thrilled that they've found my restaurant
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I don't think it would matter GGirl. Robins like to hide a bit more than some of the other small birds, by that I mean they often like going through greenery or branches to reach a nest.
Someone else will know for sure though

Not seen them Fairygirl have seen a black cap bird at one time, I need to fill the big table/ grid feeder up
Do you think if I had two nest boxes near each other they wouldn't mind like a robin one and a round hole one? for blue tits or birds that size

Yeah robins like nest boxes open like the one in the photo and hidden a bit behind a hedge would be ideal
