or would a manual saw be better somehow? perhaps less dangerous! I do already have chainsaw gloves/helmet etc.
Definitely less dangerous - never use a chainsaw up a ladder. In fact I'd go further and say never use one unless both your feet are on the ground!
The problem is if you start to fall off the ladder you'll probably drop the saw as you grab for whatever you can - and who knows where the saw is going then.
Tree surgeons of course are trained to cut limbs off
Wolf do a very long, extendable handle and I've use that with a pruning saw. I could reach to about 20 feet from the ground. A bit unwieldy but it worked without climbing a ladder.
I have a small electric chain saw. Screwfix own make called Titan. I use it all the time up a ladder and haven’t managed to cut my arm off yet. They do have inbuilt safety features like altermatic cut off and you can lock the saw until you are in position so you don’t climb the ladder with the saw on or able to turn itself on. Chain saws are perfectly safe to use by anyone as long as you use the safety features and don’t do anything silly (like I did when I stood on the wheely bin with it forgetting the bin has wheels and I went crashing to the ground. But the safety kicked in and turned the saw off befor any real harm done)
