Epimediums and some of the hardy geraniums, such as geranium macrorrhizum, are good in dry shade.
I've given up riding too, getting arthritic, but I've kept my old mare and given my younger one, but not that young, 18, to my daughter. I also have a 26yr old rescue horse. I spend longer on my garden now.
Did I see somewhere that you are in Norfolk? OH has a cottage in Norfolk, mine is in France, we go to Norfolk quite often.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Hi Busy-Lizzie and Pat E, i will look those plants up thank you, yes we live in Norfolk BL, i had horses for years, not on own land so DIY and livery fees meant time and money. My work was making it increasingly difficult to juggle everything and I finally achieved my goal last year ( half pass and flying changes ) with my dutch mare. I had the opportunity to sell her to a wonderful person who adores her. I'm the other side of 50 and fancied a change, we have a big garden which was just lawn and oak trees, so it has meant I can work my second passion. ?
Loana, I meant to add that the Ruscus has separate male and female plants, so if you can get them, try to get both, because the red berries are quite nice.
It looks like you are having an early Christmas B3!
I used to have a couple of these, but not as fine looking as yours. They rarely flowered over the Christmas period, usually much later, or the buds dropped off before they had a chance to open up.
Cheeky little rose. Very pleased because I replanted it after digging it up from being planted too close under a privet hedge. Must be a survivor this one.

Ruscus like to grow in shade. They are quite tough as well.

I put it on a NNE window sill and water it when I think of it. The buds dropped off wherever else I put it.
Lovely, Cloggie. Fab colour on your weeping birch too.
