Hello Victoria Sponge, if you tick the box near post you get sent emails when others reply

Great going with tidying out the shed then you can put your bits and bobs in, is nicer to take the mess of the plot

Re - Raspberry canes garden centres sell them I think at min - they were this time last year all canes cramed together when they sell them, so it is probably fine to move them just like planting bare root you should be able to plant them - I would carefully ease the canes apart make sure they are with roots and plant at you allotment plot they may need support and raspberry canes do pop up in strange places from the plant after a few years as they have on my neighbouring plot

What about sunflowers they are good for bees and are pretty, great plan, you could still have a bird house

  • Ah, good point, Gardengirl, summer canes are selling now. I will dig up and try and separate as you say.

I'm not very good at growing sunflowers although I do like them. Started off in pots they are always miserly and weak and I start to hate themimage Some of my best sunflowers have come from the hearts I've chucked out for the birds so I might try random direct sow and wait for the ?'s to come bouncing overimage

Aym, noooooooooooo, don't threaten me with more seeds!image The long list above shows quite how over the top I have been. The only seeds I don't already have are honesty and I will collect some from some plants I have in the garden. Which should time things just right for fresh sowing etcimage (thank you for offering though image)

  • Loaded the car early with the first tip run and then went to b&q after to get some manure and seed compost. No dead plants to buy, most disappointing.  Dropped 100ltrs of manure off at the allotment, but really should have left it all in hindsight and bought another lot for the garden.

Loaded the car again for an early tip run tomorrow. There was a frost last night so hopefully it killed any leprosy or similar in the cushionsimage Decided to keep one of the manky cushions for a giant wicker chair I took off the heap. Might make it into a cosy seat for the shack.

Felt a slight creak in my back after this carry on so took myself off for a 9.5 mile walk to free up the twistiness. Got home and detwigged the Xmas tree for the log pile and dug up the rasps for tomorrow. Had a go at separating them but it was all a bit much, think I'll just plant the clump centrally and tie the canes eitherside. Millions more worms in my garden soil than in the allotment, I wonder why?

Fed and watered the birds and mouse.

  • Did another tip run, dark and early. I'll have to go again but will hoard stuff until I've got a car load.

Got the summer rasps planted, tried to tie them in laterally but they really wanted to wave around in the air. May have to rethink that.

Measured out the flowerbed side of the allotment. Will have 5 beds parallel to each other, each separated by a path and connected at one side with a long thin bed which I intend to be the sweet pea line. Planted the linarias I dug out of a border in my garden into bed 2.

  • Weeeed it down this morning aymimage Fortunately I was undertaking a clean-clothes non-gardening activity at the time and only became slightly dampened and windswept. Was even a bit sunny by the time I got back out.

Have identified some perennials in the jardin this pm that I can move up to the allotment in order to make room for more plants?? Jolly good!

Went to Homebase yesterday and saw they have fruit plants raspberry, currant bushes for £5

Your idea of beds sound good nice layout

If you find a local stable some times they let you take the manure for free but dig yourself and bag it, that will have lots of worms in

Does your site get bark chipping delivered for free?     from tree surgeons

    Hampshire Gardener
  • Apparently there is a manure heap I can help myself to and I've been offered a barrow. I will probably take advantage when I need a lot and I have sorted a clear area...it will help with the worms.

I'm not sure about bark chippings, I paid a surgeon when I wanted logs. I've only met two other keepers so far, perhaps I'll get more info when I meet more. I think many of them don't visit in the winter...
