It's special project for me. We have 10,000 sqm and the water and the soil are so hard. PH is around 3. Nothing grow! I took a sample of the water and soil home, and start growing duckweed. I beleive if duckweed grows I can have fish, ducks, chickens, pigs ,,,,
The strange thing was it grew so beautifully for about a week, then slowly dying off.
Vishu, I have two setups.
1) is the small bucket, pic 3. It contains the water and the duckweed from another pond. Sample one is for compareson with sample 2.
2) sample 2 is hard water and hard soil PH, around 3. We treated it with CaO3 to raise the PH to 6-6.5. Added cure cow manure as nutrition.
As I mentioned above, both sample grew so good, then dying off.
Here is my observation:
1- root white color 15mm long, so nutrition is OK, We added NPK fertiliser as Nitrogen suppliment, nothing change.
2- water is clear, no algae,
3- PH 6 and 6.5 are good,
4- temparature is 30 degree C so it OK.
5-shaded about 50%, so that should be OK. I took sample 1, and cover it with a roof, 2 days went by and I see nothing change.
Could it be some thing that is toxic that killing my duckweed?
Thanks for reading.

I only know how to kill duckweed but perhaps that in itself might help with looking for possible causes? I eliminated the duckweed from my pond using a product called Ecopond which claims to work be introducing bacteria which remove the nutrients needed for the duckweed. It needs to be added to the water at regular intervals and claims not to harm anything else. It certainly worked for our pond and didn't seem to do any harm to other plants, fish or wildlife.
Camper110....I don't quite get what you are trying to do. What kind of area are you in? Is there anything growing naturally nearby? What is the connection between the duckweed and the animals you want? If the PH of your soil is really 3 it sounds like it would be unhealthy for you as well as any animals. That's as acid as vinegar and will kill fish. Is this some kind of industrial waste site?

That oily film should be no problem. Do some water changes an see how it does........ Btw, where are you from?
Perhaps you are killing it with kindess. It should not be necessary to add any fertiliser whatsoever.

Cheers Singing Gardener - I've made notes!
