duckweed dying

Would somesone help me what is wrong with my duckweed?

Growing condition:

1) water temp less 30 degree C

2) sunlight cover: 30-50 percent.

3) Algea not seen, however a cloudy thin film is floating on water.

4) Nutrition not known, but roots longest are 20mm. average is 12mm.  Last time it happened I add in a bit NPK fertilizer but it did not help.

5) First turning white then yellow  then die

6) PH 6-6.5

    Can be iron deficiency........

Tell us more about your setup? What is it? Pond or aquarium? And what's the substrate?

I am guessing from your water temperatures camper that you are not in the UK. This is a UK based site and most of our members live either in the UK or Europe. Here in the UK duckweed is regarded as an invasive pest and has to be regularly removed otherwise it leads to oxygen deficiencies in ponds which then affects the wildlife in ponds. Some species of duckweed do overwinter at the bottom of ponds but duckweed does usually remain green. Sorry I cannot advise as to your problem but if I had it I would breathe a sigh of relief image

I don't understand duckweed. Some years one of both of my ponds look like lawns, other years, nothing. None this year but I've never done anything to get rid of it.

  • We've not had much duckweed this year - I've been saying thank you to the water snails we introduced last year - they've been munching through it at a rate of knots - and the blanket weed too image

Put in some mature koi or other carp variety.....

You can also feed duckweed to goldfish, rabbits, chickens or livestock as it is high in proteins........very nutritious.

Vishu, I would  , but our lake is 0.8 acre and we have otters around here so adding fish is just very expensive otter food.

I'm going to have a mass planting of water lilies next year and see if I can crowd out the duckweed a bit.
