When my mum was young (in the 1930s/1940s) Christmas wasn't even a holiday in Scotland. It was hardly celebrated at all. My grandparents (her mum and dad) were married on Christmas day, as it was just an ordinary day here
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I suppose Facebook has put a stop to those awful round robin Christmas boasting sheets that come with a card so that your more talented, fortunate and interesting acquaintances can share the achievements of themselves and their wonderful children. These people can tell us about their wonderful lives all year round now. Oh joy!
I have a relation that sends one of those B3. I really wish they wouldn't! It's another 'over the pond' fixation that seems to have found it's way over here, although I forgive my relatives as they're Canadian
Sadly it hasn't stopped people airing their entire laundry baskets on that dreadful Faceache. What has society come to when a man was murdered up here at Christmas and the first thought the daughter had was to go on there and tell the world about how she felt....
You couldn't pay me enough to be on it. A vile invention in my opinion.

I have friends on faceshxte! They can send me pics from friends "without myself being on it" Only way you can get these reactions are When your on it yourself!
I'm not on Facebook. I don't want to be reminded of "friends" from the past: If I lose touch with someone, it's deliberate. LinkedIn is bad enough (and equally useless) to be on, but at least I can turn off all the notifications. If an event is FB-only, I don't bother - there are far too many other interesting happenings in real life to go to.
I also find the "here's what our happy family has been up to this year, complete with a cute photo" letter extremely odd - call me cynical, but IMO if someone feels the need to create that kind of happy family brand for themselves, complete with marketing materials, there isn't enough real happiness or joy there. Or maybe it's just a difference of cultures, as far as I can tell this letter is an exclusively US-ian thing. (Distant relatives of mine, with whom I used to exchange Christmas cards, kept sending me these annual happy-family photos. It stopped abruptly when I sent them a photo of me in return. (Best I could do - I don't have a spouse or children, so no family photos available.) Come to think of it, they never sent me another Christmas card again either, so I must have committed some awful faux-pas by it. )
