AuntyRach, also love nothing more than smelling the clean washing and jumping into bed after a long day to the smell of freshly cleaned bedding..Reminds me of my mum ?
I think that smells can evoke memories very powerfully and can create comfort. I encourage my patient's relatives to bring in freshly laundered pillow cases, blankets or nightware to help the patient feel more relaxed.

We also have little pieces of wood...offcuts, that we soak for. 24 hours in smellies like aromatherapy oils then sit them on top of radiators...?

As for Christmas scents - I saw this article:

Crumbs, Aym, don't go to a timber yard then!
I also like the smell of wood - such a clean but warm smell. Love a sandalwood or cedar candle - reminds me of a Swiss hotel I stayed in once.
