How it Began

Thought I would share what has made me end up here

After divorce I got promotion and moved to a bigger house (go figure) and really started enjoying life lol

Bored of a wall to wall lawn in my small garden after 18 months decided to just add a bit of colour

Given the number of pots in the back garden I would strongly recommend getting an automatic watering system for them. That's assuming you have an outside tap or could get one fitted.  The manual system might not work all the time, particularly after a bad day at school  image.

I think it could be Petunia Night Sky Peter. Lovely garden but I agree with KT regarding the watering. image

Hi Peter, I seem to have missed your intro page, sending a belated "hello, and welcome to the forum" from meimage

You've made good a start there in a brand new garden? Growing in pots gives you the opportunity to move things around until you decide on a final planting design.

Not certain on the petunia name, think it's something to do with 'night skies' or 'stars' image.  I didn't grow it but saw lots & lots of photo's of it on aym's "my flowers" thread. I'm sure someone will remember the proper name.

EDIT:  thanks LB, I knew we'd get thereimage

thanks guys, Night skies !! will be getting more this year, really liked it.

Automated watering.......... I live in Scotland so it kinda is automated even in the summer :) but agree, something to look at.

Over the summer I had a 7 day break and came back to a very dry set of pots, lost a few bits and bobs, and it certainly would stop my excessive use of the hose pipe.

Deffinately something to have a think about.

    Cheers

Hello Peter and welcome. image  It`s obvious that you have green fingers, and I wonder if you are going to plant anything in the ground?  Pots are great, but you would probably find the care and watering much easier if you dug your border over  image

     Thanks Tetley

Not sure, this house is my last house, here for life now. I might enjoy a few years of pots first.

I find with new build houses the lawns and soil are usually 2-3 inches deep then its building waste and rubble. So in my eyes it would be quite a big job to convert to a bed.

I`m going to membrane probably another meter in the next few weeks as I need more space for potted tree lillies at the back, want to make a tiered effect with the plants and pots. Also I`m trying to grow plants that will come back year and year, once established then its deffinatley something I will consider.

On the left side you can see my garage wall, going to affix 3-4 wall troughs to try and create a flowing wall of trailing somethings (undecided yet but have bought a load of seed to grow come Feb time)

Then again I might do it on the fence on the right side............ then again I might do both image

    Cheers

You might be surprised, even with Scottish Liquid Sunshine, how little water actually get into the pots even in a major downpour.  The plants create a natural umbrella and stop the rain getting through to the soil.  After all the work you've done it would be a shame to lose plants.

No I agree, I got an outside tap fitted and bought a hose so over the summer most nights they got a soaking. I dont mind doing it as find it kinda theraputic :)

  • Any scope to put a down pipe on that garage (?) and fit a small water butt?  l  Aside from saving your water bill it will let you grow ericaceous plants in your tubs; tap water will neutralise the soil over time.

There are a good few comments saying you should dig out your border, I must confess I like how the pots look together.  Perhaps a trellis up the wall would finish the job?

Looking good.  Sorry to hear about your divorce.
