Having to go to work has got in the way of gardening in the past couple of weeks, along with some poor weather. However I got out for a couple of hours today and put out a few tulip bulbs, collected a few leaves, etc. My thoughts have turned to making a plan for one area.

I'd like an area for hardening off plants coming out of the greenhouse. Logically this would be by the brick path next to the greenhouse. I also would like spaces for cut flowers and a nursery bed. The outline plan is this...

I'm thinking a diagonal path to get from the water butts to the path by the garage. I also need to put in a path running along the garage for clearing the gutter and maintenance. Suggestions are welcome image

Does the budget run to cold frames for hardening plants off in?

You've done a great job and a nursery bed area can be really useful.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

The budget could maybe stretch to homemade cold frames if I chopped up some pallets we've got. I'd have to look at some designs to get an idea how to put them together.

Well this is my first attempt at a design. I'm not convinced by it and I've only just done it! image

I'm now thinking of not having the diagonal path and using rectangular beds. Or maybe a meandering path. Hmmm...

Well work began on this spot yesterday. I knocked up some frames for the beds which will help to separate soil and pathways. Today I took out the rhubarb plant that was in the way, scraped off some of the turf and re-set a few of the edging stones. This is as far as I got...

I also made a new addition - a little bug hotel. The wood is a bit bright at present but it will weather quickly.

I've just read through this whole thread.  Good work Slum. What a great space you have to work with.  I

made a cold frame from pallets; hope this gives you ideas. The lid is an old door.

    That's fantastic Redwing.

Just what I'm looking for.  Trying to get hold of some pallets at the minute.

...and here it is...the new area ready for spring...

Time will tell how the areas will get planted...no firm plans yet. Some flowers for cutting and making it pretty with some edibles thrown in as well.

Along with doing these paths we've also spread 20 tonnes of road planings on the driveway and made a base for a new shed. It has been a busy few days but I did get to use an mini excavator for a day... and who amongst us does not like playing with toys? image

  • Slum a pat on the back, that is some makeover ... well done to you ?
