Dahlias Dying

Hi

I am having some trouble with my Dahlias. They were both doing really well and then the leaves all started getting eaten. Now the buds are forming and turning brown before they flower. There is a white powdery coating on the leaves. I looked for vine weevils with a torch but couldn't find any. I have put down porridge to kill slugs but nothing is working and I am lost.

I repotted one with new compost and it appears to be fairing better but I would like to know what it is so I can avoid these both dying.

I have tried to add a photograph but am unsure how to.

Thanks

Hi Anna. To put a picture up you need to click on the little camera icon above the top right hand side of the text box and follow instructions. Make sure that the picture is not too big otherwise it won't upload it.

  • Did you forget to water it?

  • Hi Bob,

No I have been watering frequently, daily during the hot weather.

    Hi Ladybird4 ,

i have one in a wooden planter that looks like that, i think it's slugs and snails, i can't see the white on the flowers so i can't help with that, i took some cuttings off of mine yesterday just in case it doesn't make the winter

  • When you say the buds are turning brown before they flower - do they go on to flower? I think it could be slugs or snails too as some of mine looked like that. I also had a lot of blackflies around the buds of mine. I also had ants all over the leaves. I did not notice if there were any white coatings as well. I filled a spray bottle with water and washing up liquid, and then sprayed it to get rid of the blackflies. You could try this anyway and see if there is any improvement. Whatever the creatures are on it may come off.

  • Thanks Sanjy67 Yeah I thought it was likely to be slugs and snails. I have repotted it today, like I did with the other one. Hopefully it will revive. How do I take a cutting? Sorry I am very new to gardening so appreciate any advice.

well i just too a cutting near to the top of a stem, so it had leaves at the top and a set of leaves below, i took the cutting below the second set of leaves, then remove these two bottom leaves right near the stem. with the top leaves remove any flower buds or central growth by pinching it out with your nails and if leaves are big cut them in half across the leaf, the stem mustn't be hollow in the middle for ir to root, this should be fine if you are taking cuttings from ends as above. put into a compost with added either grit, perlite, vermiculite or some gritty sand and water in the cuttings and put on a windowsill with light but no direct sunlight. I have a hydropod and have put mine in there which sprays the roots with water to root it, i'm not sure if it will work but i'm giving it a go but i may do what i have advised you to do aswell just in case of failure, good luck :)

  • Thanks Sanjy67. I will give it a go! Hoping that they perk up as they were doing so well before.
