Roman problem

Hi

I moved into a house last year that has a mature garden with a lovely Rowan tree with orange berries. This year the berries have been beautiful, but about a month ago started to turn brown and some dropped off. Rowan trees in my area still have lovely orange berries, what could be happening?

thanks

Might just be too dry BP. What's growing round it or nearby?

Have a look at the soil and see. If it's got loads more berries on it, it may just be discarding the excess.

Not sure what else to suggest. I'm assuming the tree is healthy otherwise?

  • Yes it is, thank you that's most helpful

They're pretty tough BP - so hopefully there's no issue with it.  image

If you've already had a good display of berries from it, they might just be dropping off because of the conditions. A feed in spring will probably help for next year, and plenty of water and a mulch if it's in a dry spot. Some tlc in other words  image

Lots of plants also show the effects of early dry weather later on in the year.

Rowans always look much better up your way than they do here Fairy. I haven't got brown berries but plenty of brown leaves. Our soil is very dry and rainfall is very low most years, not so low this year and the rowan is better than usual. Berries have usually gone (eaten before ripe or dropped off) by now.

They're really spectacular at the moment nut - best display for many years I think. Must take my camera and get a pic of the ones nearby - in my local Co-op car park! They have a nursery there (children not plant image) and it's very pretty. They are a glorious shade of red just now  image

The ones on the hills get a bit battered, but they've been beautiful too

That's beautiful Fairy. If mine looked like that I would be overjoyed.

You learn what the local soil and conditions are like over the years, I wouldn't choose a rowan for my patch now.

  • The Rowans here are so spectacular that even my mum has noticed. Non gardener/non noticer! We had similar conditions to you Fg with a very dry Spring, hot May and rain the rest. They usually do well here but this year is amazing. It could be the wet Summer and if you didn't have that BP it could be the problem.

One of mine is a bit off but it's still very young and maybe isn't sure about giving up it's flowers for berries. It had both for ages! The one nearest to it is a knock out. There's no accounting for it.

I did notice that the tree with slightly more orange coloured berries was much later.

That was up in Lochearnhead a few weeks ago nut - when I was walking there. The bracken was all turning too. Bit further north and east of where I am. Think you're right about conditions though - no point having something if you're constantly having to fight to keep it looking good.

Took daughter to work , so I took the camera

This is one of the ones at the Co-op

It looked even better  a few weeks ago - the berries were redder than that.

The bloke was cutting the grass. I waited till he'd moved in case he thought I was taking a pic of him....image
