Canna lilies
i was given a Canna lily, which has flourished in the garden, and grown quite tall, with amazing flowers. i just love it and want more. I found a couple in the "dead zone" of a garden centre. They've finished flowering and look very pot bound
my question is, should I plant it now or wait till next year, do I need to dig it up over winter, like dahlias and can I split it into several plants- and if so, when ?
ooops, that turned into several questions !

Leave in pots for now.
Treat like Dahlia tubers, over Winter. I put mine in pots and keep slightly moist, although many would say not to do this.
You can divide the plants in Spring, when they are starting to grow, just ensure each division is showing a growing point. I start mine indoors in February.

Might sound a stupid question , but what do you mean by "canna lily"
Google "canna lily" and you'll see 3 completely different plants.
I got someone very confused once Hosta - I thought they meant Calla lilies when they meant Cannas, because they said Canna lilies
Perhaps Anne could clarify which it is!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I assumed Canna, that was certainly what my advice was for.

Well I thought Canna and Canna lily were the same thing
they have big dark leaves and a thick stem, and deep red flowers on it
will try taking a pic later, still in my Jim jams
Cannas then Anne

Cannas indeed Anne.
Some folk call Zanteschia Aethiopica, Canna Lillies. Ironically, neither are members of the lily family.
Just thought I'd check. I wasn't trying to catch you out honest. Hope you don't think I was.
Advice as above. Mine have succumbed to Canna virus which is doing the rounds but I'm giving them another year to see how they cope.
