You are right Verdun, I didn't expect them to be perennial, but they are colourful and fill a space. However some have died off whilst in flower which was disappointing, they may have been too dry as they were facing south.
Can Rudebeckia perennials be grown from seed? i.e. seed purchased at the GC? Having grown these and Echinacea for the first time this year, I would opt for echinacea for the amount of bees that have been drawn to the flowers although not so prolific.
