@fairygirl I also assumed the pigeons would prefer to eat from the ground and started scattering a pile over the floor but they seem to prefer pecking the hell outta the feeder !
I've carried on leaving some on the floor as found the sparrows will eat this instead if their area is occupied lol
@dove yesss, I did notice lots of green grass-like sprouts popping up between all the stones on the floor under the feeders!
But you'll be happy to know there's plenty of the little cuties in my area! In my old house (not too far from where i am now) I used to see them flying into neighbours roofs under the guttering too!
Smart pigeons here, they bounce up and down on the branch with the bird feeder so the seed falls out and they clear up. The blackcaps are happy with this arrangement though.
Loads of sparrows in London - thought I read that it was our most common bird again. I wonder why you aren't seeing so many, Dove?
Daisy - thats exactly what my pigeons do too! cbrierley, I buy 'no grow' bird seed mix - excellent stuff. Sparrows may be the commonest bird in London but the most common bird in the UK now is the wren.
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Daisy, we have house sparrows here, but nationally the numbers have declined hugely. They are on the RSPB Red List! It's thought to be due largely to a reduction in suitable nest sites due to a change in building techniques and roofing materials. Their favourite nesting spots are in the gaps under old fashioned pantiles.
Autocorrect keeps trying to change that to 'panties'
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Well no wonder they are in decline if they keep trying to nest in old fashioned panties!!
Had a couple of wrens here 2 years ago, not seen since. Almost in central London, slightly to the West we have sparrows, lots of different tits, blackbirds, starlings, blackcaps, magpies, pigeons, jays, robins, parakeets and very occasionally a woodpecker. 5 years ago we would see finches of all sorts but hardly a one now. Don't know if the parakeets are their problem.
I was wondering why my underwear disappeared off the washing line Dove I gave up using the fluffy basket liners as they got dismantled around the plants and the earth fell out, but pants!?
Magpies and crows are my main 'roof clearers' as well, but they don't pile it up ready for the heap, they leave that to me. I am W of London too Daisy and also get parrots and very few finches, but loads of sparrows. And its not just the pigeons that mop up under the caged feeders.........

Ahhhh he's also the local garden goodies thief is he
I don't think I've ever paid much attention to squirrel diet, would it be normal for them to dig up and eat bulbs.. Haha !
I were just having a closer look at the pic of your bird feeders, these would be great for me to use to protect the seeds from the pigeons as, like the little ones in your pic, the sparrows can simply hop inside the cage!
Fab feeders if the wildlife burgulars are out and about!

Very enjoyable to watch!

Tee hee Dove. That creates a wonderful image in my head! Was that the inspiration for the song about Auntie Mary and the canary?

What a cutie!
And how lovely to know it's not just the birds that benefit from your generousity and kindness feeding your local birds! :-D
Keep it up all! The decreasing breeds have a much better chance of increasing again with us all pitching in and proving shelter and food for them :-D
Yes indeed CB, very cute but as far as he is concerned seeds are not enough. He is very partial to bulbs as well
