Was just thinking, on this train home, I might have cut them at the fence height and then grown the top half for a quicker screen. Would that have made a bushier top and ongoing too heavy screen? Doesn't matter now as know it will look better overall being bushier from base.
Also any suggestions on other quick growing hedges for screening off the teaming 10ft of the garden Fence? Have got some lovely black bamboo I've grown in big pots I could plant but have heard they can be quite invasive to neighbouring land. But would create a nice immediate screen at end of garden. othwrwise am interested in more heading plants that could shoot up in a year (maybe honeysuckle or golden privet??)
Check out the specialist hedging sites Ned - we're approaching bare root season. Much cheaper and you can get a good load of plants for your hard earned dosh
I can recommend Hopes Grove - I've used them a few times. Lots of them though
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Meanwhile I have these in reserve which I transplanted out so the laurels could fit in.... (portugese laurel and golden gilt I think) They could make up the remaining 10ft of the border but not sure how soon they will grow up......what do you guys think in terms of growth potential??

And you're right - I'd go a bit lower - don't forget the gardening saying - Growth follows the knife
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Will prune back a bit more when I get in.

I can't believe the price of hedging! But then it does make you appreciate the value of well grown plants
