  • I'm guessing its Botryosphaeria. I have a few on one site that do a similar thing. It seems more prevalent on older branches so I'm taking out all the iffy bits and disposing of them then I'm going to prune out about a fifth each year to keep the plant vigorous. Have a look at a stem cross-section for brown patches and also the nodules on the surface.
