Oh come on!

poor old Monty is in trouble again image

some people have chosen to take offence when he slammed begonias a few weeks back. his opinion and I am happy for him and anyone else to offer it.  I don't like begonias either....those big, blowsy, shapeless overly bright monstrosities. (Ha ha!  That's shocked some of you image). However, I know one or two who are growing superb, impressive begonias so huge respect image.

i grow a couple of the "bonfire" small flowered cascading type and I really like those

now Monty has ruffled a few more feathers by (tongue in cheeek) criticising those trying to be self sufficient.  Shock! Horror!

I hope the powers that be don't rein Monty in.  Free speech even in the horticultural world is essential.

I think he's trying to take over the Jeremy Clarkson roleimage

There have been occasions recently where he seems to have been controversial / contentious just for the sake of it.

Now, in the latest programme, he's trying to make a take over bid for Jamie Oliver's TV slot.  We have few gardening programmes as it is, so please leave the recipes to the cookery shows. image

It was only a bit of cooking if you could say it was.He used to do a programme called fork to fork,i thought that was good.image

I love the fact he says what he thinks and long may that freedom exist. There are types of gardens I really dislike but I don't think that the owners of said gardens are wrong. That is their taste and I dare say some people would not like my style of gardening. I don't mind him giving a tip about how to use veggies in his shows, some people may be inspired to grow more by that.

It should be a golden retrievers programmeimage

  • I've grown begonias this year.    I don't like them, and they're not worth the effort.   The hanging baskets look awful, and the double ones are too heavy for their stems.

Monty's entitled to an opinion.   I wonder what he thinks of decking.  (yuk and high maintenance)

    When/where was this?

  • Although I don't like the kind of Begonias that are grown for their flowers, I love the foliage Begonias, with their textures, leaf colour and spiral shapes, It is a pity that those are not hardy!

I like Monty Don but he says everything as if it's fact not opinion, as long as people realise that it's all good lol. I sometimes feel, just get on with and show us the gardening instead of pausing all the time to tell us what you love and hate but then it's probably all scripted.

I'm new to flowers, I like begonias, ended with loads from a lucky dip wowcher deal....they're strange little plants but I think they have cheered up my baskets and pots.
