I love Dahlias so go with those! Just to add some value; what about Lavender? Not large blooms but lots of them which may well compensate for it. Plenty of varieties.
Hybrid musk rose Buff Beauty - we have clay and this has been flowering for months. Second flush later! Most beautiful and reliable rose, very fragrant, very healthy and very vigorous.
Also Bonica rose is quite good but not very fragrant...
If you want brigher colours (just re-read your post) I'd recommend hybrid tea roses Super Trouper or Troika, which are very bright orange shades!
Thank you very much for all your time and suggestions. I already have Hydrangea (trying hard to get one to go blue), fuchsia (Lady Boothby and others) and a range of Dahlias (mine seem not to flower until July but hold till october at least). Really like the Marguerite, Rudbeckia and rose suggestions. As a by the by I have tried germinating verbena bonariensis for the last three years. Finally got one to grow this year but still waiting for a bloom. And, yes, I know for eveybody else it sets seed like a weed - there may be the root of my problem......
Thanks again, looking forward to a colourful next summer.
Have a Marguerite (sorry about the spelling, my computer will accept anything) in my garden after out growing its pot, just flowers and flowers, very hardy too.
Christmas rose for winter colour and rosemary, both long flowering plants, a bit on the short size, granted but well worth the stain on the neck.

Co-incidentally, just sold a 'Kyushu' this morning! H-C

Lavender and fuchsia, looks so nice together and flowers forever.
