Can you suggest a plant?

bobloesbobloes Posts: 134

Hi All

Does anyone have a suggestion for a plant with the following characteristics?

Bright, mid-size to large size blooms which flower in the summer for at least three months.  Height to 1.5/2 metres, spread to max 1 metre.  I live by the sea in Weymouth so frost is not a big concern.  My soil is clay and reasonably neutral.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Thanks

Margarita, they flower and flower, cut them well back at the end of the season.

Heleniums are good too. Sorry Iona, I have no idea what the plant Margarita is. I drink mine with a twist of lime and lots of crushed ice! image

I blame the spellchecker for changing words.

I didn't know what Margaritas were either so I looked them up and found that they are indeed argyranthemums. I was given a free tray of yellow ones by my plug plant nursery and they have all died. They seemed to dry out very quickly and they didn't like being in the sun. I looked them up and read that they like the sun but not very hot sun. The sun in Dordogne is very hot. They are also a lot shorter than 1 1/2 to 2 metres.

I love heleniums and veronicastrums and I have both, but they don't flower as long as 3 months here.

Definetly Dahlias. You'll be spoilt for choice from the National Dahlia Collection.

  • Look at hydrangea paniculata cultivars (there are several).  A good three months in bud and flower, 'Limelight' greenish white to start then fading to pink, 'Early Sensation' more upright, 'Silver Dollar' white. H-C
