Sunflower with buds growing on stem

  • That's brilliant Alex.Lally! A lot of mine ended up like this too! At first I thought it was just one sunflower, but ended up being quite a few! I have had to keep cutting them off, because we have a really naughty squirrel who is causing a lot of destruction, breaking off the heads as they bloom, and dropping seeds everywhere - the garden is a complete mess with broken sunflower bits at the moment. I have a big job to clear it all this week. But it's really lovely to see so many mini sunflower heads on one plant. Excellent photos!

  • I have a strange flower on my sunflower stalk I have cut back and left this little flower any ideas what it might be image

  • I it's just the plants attempt to produce one more flower before the winter arrives.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I have two sunflowers that grew out of one seed, one of which has eight buds, 2cm apart, at the top of the flower, NEAREST THE ACTUAL FLOWER!

Should I cut them? Should I get stakes for support? Should I dance?! Haaalp me please......

I'm 11. Don't hate. It's evil. It killed my Dad. Or was that my dog?? Eh. The point is, IT'S EVIL!

Yes, I did that to make this "reply" longer. I'm smart. ^-^ But seriously, please help me!

Isn't it time you were in bed?

That explains it. It sounds like you have a multi headed sunflower.  They tend to grow shorter than the ones that people grow for biggest sunflower competitions. More often they are grown as cut flowers. If you only have a couple I would just feed and water then and enjoy.  The short ones don't need staking unless they are in a position where they are leaning towards the light.

maybe you have something like this.

    Where in Australia are you?

  • I have a beautiful strange one as well
