I bought 3 varieties of seeds - American Giant (can't remember the brand - bought it in a supermarket and have lost the packet), Unwins Sunshine Giant (little growers), and Unwins Oranges and Lemons. The oranges and lemons variety have already flowered, and are not as tall:
So this really tall multi-branching one must be one of the first two. It's on the left at the corner of the rockery corner rockery::
The other four really tall ones - on the middle rockery do not seem to have these extra growths. I would have thought all these varieties were only supposed to have one flower. So I am still baffled as to how this one has turned how to have multiple buds,
Sorry all the typos, could not edit it! Meant to say as you can see there are two 'oranges and lemons' variety which have flowered on the right of the middle rockery - very different in height to these giant ones. I think they are American Giant but not entirely sure...
I'd love to know what varieties other people have grown.
We also have multiple flowers on two of our giant sunflowers (we got ours from Thompson and Morgan - Giant Sunflower). This is the third year at least one of plants we have grown has had multiples!
In the wild you will get sunflowers with multiple heads
Usually you get a packet of seeds and they are F1 so have been cultivated for a single bloom
If you grow a single bloom sunflower like I have done, when the head turns to seed you collect the seeds and plant them next season and then collect the seeds from next years plant and again plant them.after a few generations they seem to revert back to their native form which will have multiple heads. I have given seeds from the same plant to work mates and some had single heads while some have plants with multiple heads.
There is a variety of sunflower that are red instead of yellow
I love sunflowers and grow them every year. the last few seasons the seeds from my single bloom sunflower have produced multiple head versions.
