It's obviously satirizing the great man's belief that  food banks are 'rather uplifting'.

No doubt, poverty is glamorous and much to be sought after!

Well, how lucky are the "common people" who depend on them!

Unless Etonians appreciate their glamour too!

You reminded me of that old pop song, "Common People", Sam.

What a convoluted tale behind it!  I suppose an artist can create myths in order to express his point as vehemently as he can.  Is he obliged to put the record straight if others choose to play detective?  Cocker certainly didn't till the girl who had actually used thosewords told the BBC (I think!) that she was the one who spoke to him about "common people", not Danae Stratou.

  • Yes, Artemis, I think I heard the girl, Katerina Kana from Cyprus, say that they were at a pub somewhere when she told him, "I want to sleep with common people"; but she didn't say, "like you."

Of course, in Greek "sleep" means sleep; it doesn't mean "copulate".  As for "common", it was a straight translation from the Greek, meaning "ordinary", as opposed to "elite".  Nothing derogatory there!

I think he came up clean in the end, admitting that he had never been a member of Danae Stratou's milieu, though he was very attracted to her.  She had, probably, never noticed his existence!

So, Katerina made an innocent comment which he exploited rather successfully in order to express his anger about social inequality.  I'm sure it made him quite rich too!

I'm sure it did, and thus no longer a member of the class of "common people" !

Interesting, I think, how idiomatic use of words can be misconstrued by others.  In this case, probably, willfully?

    Any more interesting Greek idioms?
