My mother had lab that failed its guide dog training at a young age. Apparently they are trained to do their 'business' only on command, so they don't mess when the blind person is walking them?
Well her dog was the most perfectly trained dog I've ever known, and even she failed.
Since I last posted we took in Max, an old and unwanted boy, despite being lovable and friendly. His owners change of circumstances meant they couldnt keep him any longer, He did find a new home a few weeks later..
And then we had Rolo, a lovely young chocolate lab who had been kept kennelled in his garden and ignored. He was an absolute beauty and we really wanted to keep him, but the timing wasn't right for us. Thankfully he found a new home with a family who already had a labrador to keep him company...
Then, the other day we took in Alfie, a 3yr old black lab, His owner no longer wanted him and was about to dump him in the street, but thankfully he was able to be saved. My wife travelled long distance to go and save him. Our circumstances have changed at home and I'm pleased to say that we are able to keep Alfie for ourselves. He's laps up attention and company, and is extremely friendly. He's a little underweight but we will be correcting that...
I hope you and Alfie will be happy together for a long time.
Our rescue Lab was also very underweight and had so little muscle he couldn't sit straight. We thought he may have dodgy hips but good food and exercise have done the trick and he's all fixed now - a gorgeous, big strong boy and can run for miles and sit straight.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Alfie has settled in really well. Our dog sitter loves him to bits, and when he stayed at my mothers for a couple of nights she didn't want to hand him back.
He's not very good at recall when off the lead though, something we need to work on. He's too obsessed with sniffing the ground and picking up scents, totally ignoring our calls to him. He's having the 'big snip' in a few days, which might help.

Beautiful looking dog, and perhaps my favourite breed, though I've never owned one.

Great to hear such happy news for a change.
Fantastic work you're doing LeadFarmer - long may you continue helping the unloved or unwanted man's best friend

Lucky Alfie and lucky you - lovely post.
Once I am able to spend more time at home I would love a rescue dog (Labs and Greyhounds are my favourites).
I hope you and Alfie will be happy together for a long time.

Oh he's beautiful. I'm afraid I'd be sneaking him away in my jacket!
