  • The weather is so up and down - more so than usual here - well below average sunshine and far more rain - rained from midday onwards today and just as we come in for a meal the rains stops! Playing havoc with the plants though - cucumbers start to swell in the heat (for a few short hours) and then we have two or three days of dull, gloomy and sometimes wet weather, so no wonder the fruits and veg. are not growing as they should

Good news everyone! The one that got a tickle with a paintbrush is starting to swell and there are more females appearing, will do the same with them.

    Yesterday morning.

Nanny Beach: I've picked the one in the photo above and now have 2 more starting to mature. I think the warmer weather is finally working. image

You can just see my potted courgettes on the path in the pic, they have been much better. (Despite the yellow leaves)

Sorry to read about your cucamelons on another thread, I managed 4 plants and they're growing well in the plastic greenhouse but the fruits are still very tiny.

  • Kitty, was the cucumber tasty?  Mine were a little bitter (Jogger) but had approx 5 on each plant which I was pleased about for my first year. The plants are just finishing off now - they got extremely warm in the cold GH with temps up to 110 - 45 degrees. They were short stumpy cucumbers. What were your seeds called?image Picture shows the first cucumber forming about a month ago now.

Guernsey: it's "long green ridge" an outdoor variety but I've kept them in the conservatory (bad weather/slugs). They're growing longer and skinnier than last year, but was still tasty.

Had some ham and cucumber sandwiches. image

  • Our greenhouse turned into a burning furnace in the past week or so, which has finished the cuc plants off - glad you enjoyed your tasty treat Kitty, I wonder if these plants would survive in our heat?

My very first Jogger last year was bitter, I only tried the first bit, then discovered a bit further on they tasted OK, and aparently, it was caused by the fact it was very hot in the days in March/April, I also grew them in a south facing greenhouse, this year they are round the side of the bungalow, and part of the day in shade.  I think it just got too hot in there last year, I also got powerdery mildew

  • My friend has grown Burpless cucumber, which look more like the typical commercial cuc. you see in the supermarket and taste good too - I may try them next year. No mildew here (yet), in fact the new cold greenhouse has been relatively bug free so far whereas the old GH had mealy bug and aphids by the score.
