I thought I'd give an update on the ID of this plant. As Nut thought it is indeed Musk Mallow. I decided to keep it as I really like mallows, as do the bees and other insects. I may have to prune off a few leaves as the dahlia is now growing strongly in front of it.
And, by complete chance, just a couple of feet away another musk mallow has emerged from under some California poppies and it's the Alba cultivar, with beautiful white flowers. I can't show them at the moment because I don't have my mobile to take pic's for another week or so.
