Supermarket pots are the best value as you get a lot of plants in a pot for £1. If you soak them in water and divide them carefully you can get a lot of individual plants, although you do need to nurture them a bit.
I buy supermarket pots of herbs and pot them up in a trough that lives at the back door.
Mint is kept in it's own pot so it doesn't strangle the others.
A lazy cheat, I know but very handy and inexpensive to replace the tender ones annually.
