aym, the very centre petals surrounding the unopened part, about three of them look like someone has drawn on the edge of petals with a cerise pink felt pen just on the very top tip, very random, hope i get lots next year
Oh it finally opened, that's great. Could it be Shirley Temple? I think that's a popular one and pictures of it show it having a thin cerise line.
Lucky you to have this!I had a peony given to me by an old lady - she just cut it off her plant. It had a bud on which I thought might flower but the other day the bright red petals just fell off the bud and onto the ground :-( So sad it was. Not sure why, the rest of the plant looked healthy. Probably it was in shock....I don't know what will happen next year. The gardner at my local park told me she has a peony which hasn't flowered for 6 years, I was so sad to hear this but this must be how it is with some peonies.
wakeshine maybe she has the crown of the peony buried too deep for it to flower? i read recently for newly planted peonys, 1st year roots, 2nd year shoots, 3rd year flowers so 6 yrs seems a bit long, i know they don't flower if the crown is buried, that's the extent of my knowledge. I shall google shirley temple thanks
Yeah maybe. But I didn't say that to her because she's a professional gardener so I assumed she knew how to plant it. Plus I haven't got any peonies yet, only small growths coming out the ground from some bare roots. So I thought since I'm not an expert, I better not suggest that lol. I have looked at a lot of pictures and read a lot about peonies but still no peonies :-( You're so lucky!
Sanjy, that is a healthy, happy peony. It has one enormous flower because it is newly planted but it should do more each year. Give it space and light, mulch round not over the crown and you should be able to enjoy it for years to come. It's a real beauty, too.
Beautiful flower. I bought a bartzella, intermediate ,last year. It had a couple of flowers last year, but none this year. I assume it is settling and growing bigger and better for next year.
