For me the main problems with TV coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show are repetition of the same footage time and again, and more time spent talking to celebs than showing and discussing plants and the gardens.
I can understand repeating some of the afternoon content in the evening but then recycling it the following day is excessive.
I think you'll find there's nothing particularly negative about it. I don't watch television and so therefore have not seen the CFS, however I have picked up that the gardens, good, bad and indifferent all appeal in their own ways to different people. The formality of the Husquvarna hedges, the planting in Chris Beardshaw's.... all from this and other threads. Joe Swift, whoever he is seems to irritate the life out of people and Monty's suit is a shambles.
We could all say everything is lovely and pretty and well done but the designs are provocative as well as evocative and people are meant to be challenged and have opinions.
Hazel this thread makes me smile stop worrying. Some said they switched to BGT??? I would rather watch a programme on sewerage than watch that, then we get big words I have to Google like Provocative and Evocative the brain sizzles. Love it or hate it Chelsea is a class show, that is when the continuous chatter stops and we are allowed to look and wonder. Joe Swift I could do without, he could not help but strut after he got the winner for gold over Monty who just gave that enigmatic smile I knew exactly what he was thinking. Apart from Kate Aide they could drop most of the interviews and let us see the gardens in detail. Had to admit the garden in the Main Pavilion was superb, looking forward to tonight's show when we see who got the golds.
Moan groan laugh with delight there is something for everyone at Chelsea and anyone who has been will tell you we have the best seat watching the TV.
The repeated bits are a bit much. yesterday the exmoor back story was repeated, today the Jordan back story about how cloth is woven. More gardens please. A tour of stands of garden sculpture wuldn't go amiss either.
I think that some people may be missing the concept behind the granite block garden.
The idea is, that following a nuclear holocaust all the plants will be gone, except for those behind the wall. These will eventually seed to start the world growing again.
That is modern art for you, you either love it, or hate it. I love this one.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I thought that was what the millenium seed bank was for, punkdoc.I have to say the building at Kew is a lot prettier.
I didn't like the slavery garden either. I want to relax, not be preached at.
I agree all art is subjective. I tend to like impressionist, but generally dont' like unmade beds, piles of bricks, and other stuff where basically someone is just having a laugh. Emperors new clothes and all that.
