2 easy tests wakeshine, maybe hefty will oblige. Dig one up and see what the roots are like, or wait for it to flower, which it will soon by the look of it.
thing is, ive said before, ive lived here for 14 years and only gardening for 2, my point being ive never seen acers or invasive geums there in the past 14 years.............
It only takes a few seeds to get the avens going. If it wasn't there last year it's not likely to be the perennial anemone. Avens is annual, or maybe biennial. Can you remember what the roots were like?
