Cat deterrent

ShepsSheps Posts: 2,236

Morning everyone,

My new, un-planted flower beds have turned into 3 giant Kitty Litter trays, I've been weeding cat poop out of them for the last 2 days and I think I need a deterrent of some sort, because I don't want this to continue once the beds are planted up in June.

So, I was looking at those Ultrasonic ones, but not too sure which ones to go for, so any help would be appreciated.

Below are the giant Kitty trays

Thanks

Lots of threads on here about cats if you want to do a search - some get quite nasty.

I've never used a sonic deterrent. If the beds are empty I'd just lay some chicken wire over the top for now - this will keep the cats off.

The chicken wire can stay on while plants are very small and the cats probably won't use the beds once the plants have established and bushed out. If they do - a few strategically placed bamboo skewers does the trick!

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

Agree with Topbird.  If you plant them up so there is no bare earth showing, the cats will lose interest.  Cover them until planted. Trimmings from thorny shrubs placed on top of any bare patches also works well.  In general the gizmos are a waste of money, don't work and only lead to more frustration, so much so that some folk get rather obsessed with this.image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks Topbird...I will head out for Chicken Wire in the morning and get them covered up until I plant them up.

I will be planting up with well established plants, so I'm hoping the pooping will stop.

Think I'll still be looking for one of the Ultrasonic ones, just need to know which ones work, if any.

Thanks Bob, once planted, will a mulch of some sort work?

Wish I had the time for a dog, but work kind of gets in the way, Tetley.

Nice planters Sheps. How are they made? They don't look like " I ran them up from a few pallets" to me. Rather swanky I'd say. image

Sadly the cats round here take no notice of my dense planting and abundant bamboo skewers  image

I also have carpet gripper rod along the top of my fences Sheps. That seems to help. You'd need to be sure there aren't other places they can easily get in though. I have that problem at the moment.

Pleased you like them, PP...they are made from 38mm decking boards and lined with heavy duty weed membrane in the bottoms and black polythene around the insides to help keep the soil in place.

I have to agree, they do look rather good, just a shame they are full of cat poop image

  • Cats like stable ground in which to do their business so anything that will disrupt their foothold will work.

Wire netting will work but if you have no other use for the netting afterwards your wasting your money.

Branches and twigs that they cannot scratch to one side will work well but anything that will make it unstable for them will also work.

Hi Fairygirl...sorry to hear that the cats are still digging in your beds, hope that doesn't happen to me once all the measures are in place image

I have 80 of these to put up on the fences

Which will hopefully stop the cats using the fences as a cat highway.
