My thoughts with the soil are it looks nice is easy to manage and I have a near unlimited supply of horse manure so keeping the soil rich is easy and free.
I have read nothing but bad things about membranes to the point that they are useless and weeds can grow back anyway but if i were to put the stones back would they not just dissappear into the soil again without one?
The previous owners used thick plastic tarpaulin but weeds just seem to network underneith it and pop up in any hole anyway?

I did a gravel path that was completely swamped by brambles, ivy, mint, willowherb, couch grass , potentilla, rockcress, etc etc.
I hand weeded every plant individually, getting the tool under the roots.
Bit extreme I know,
took half a day but I really enjoyed getting stuck in.
Cheers verdun
