I love astrantias. i'm not sure they like my garden though ? I think it's too dry in summer for them and i'm rubbish at watering. Or maybe they take several years to establish from small pot plants? Fingers crossed if i keep playing musical chairs i'll find a nice spot... Star of Beauty definitely lives up to its name! The cerise one is gorgeous too.
I was sulking other day as though I didn't have anything but a camellia, everything's slowly bursting out,y better half does do gardening and complains we have too many plants, sadly most are weeds. The iris I thought was blue bought in sale bin then forgotten about. Two have bloomed (the bulbs had completely dried out before planting) I'm very pleased. Now to find more!
Aym, i first saw astrantias at an open gardens day nearby so they do very well. I think my soil is very dry in summer and all the astrantias i planted were bought at GW live mid june... i've had a look and the oldest clumps are not doing too badly so there might be hope for me and astrantias! Yeah!
talking of plants musical chairs earlier, perfect example: sanguisorba mezethingy. I bought it 3 years ago. It's in its 3rd spot after spending the winter in a pot on the patio and having been threatened to end up on the compost heap! 1st time it's flowered ?
The seedheads are pulsatilla. On the same picture calendula indian prince, bud and the back of the petals dark maroon and bright orange inside. Self seeded last autumn.
cerinthe i sowed 2 years ago and ended up with a few pathetic seedlings and wondered what was the fuss about that plant... Noticed some seedlings last autumn and here they are in all their glory!
I'm planning to do a mass sowing of annuals in sept/oct time. (Save seeds and let a few plant self seed) They seem to do much better than the ones i sow in the spring.
