I sure am Verdun, I am very good at pain management, but I would have thought she would have time to wait until it worked, with ours, they give the injection, then the patient sits in the waiting room while they see to the next one.

OH has just come back from Dentist, I was dental phobic for many years 1975, found a lovelly lady who was my dentist till 1999, when she retired. I stayed with the practice (NHS) even after moving. She gave me diazepam to start off with, then many years of clear rounds, (only went every 12 months) was fine. unfortunately, I broke a double back tooth a couple of years back eating a granary roll (I recon it must have had a microscopic crack) it broke at gum level, found emergency clinic, changed to local dentist, she couldnt remove it because of the size of the r oot and it went under the tooth next door. Still feeling fine about it, had to have tooth removed by Maxillo Facial Surgeon, lovelly lady, came out went shopping, THEN, got a dry socket! Anyone who has had one knows the pain!!! Christmas, so no emergency dental care, local Hospitals dont have dentists any more, nearly went mad with pain, finnally after New Year back to original Surgeon. Now, dental phobic, desided to go private, found a dentist specialising in cowards like me, lovelly lady really happy, front tooth filling, (had been done in 1975 so cannot complain) she gave me just enough "local" that by the time she had finnished, numbness had gone. THEN she sent me to the hygenist, young girl all swishy hair, NEVER spoke to me at all nor did the nurse. At one point asked what the instruments were, and told her, if a Dr was going to perform a treatment on you, they would show you what they were using and explain, told her I was having a panic attack, (it really hurt) she said in a totally disinterested tone, I should sit in the waiting room for a few minutes then. Told her I wanted to get out. I was in such a state I couldnt remember where I had parked the car. I went to Tourist information, local Taxi rank, and finnally, the Samaritans, felt really stupid, I was running around town, 2 hours, looking for the car, had blisters which had burst, and were bleeding. Lady said have a cup of tea, then very sensible - how far from the dentist surgery did I park the car, about 3 minutes walk!! I havent gone back because I couldnt face it. I have now made a appointment next week, with a dentist someone on here recomended (Lou 12) because I have a huge filling the other side which needs a crown, and a filling replaced which has been in situ for over 40 years!
Hi Nanny Beach, the website must have had its make over before I had a chance to read your story. How did you get on with your appointment? Your experience sounds horrendous.
I went back to my dentist today and this time Mrs F was insistent about coming too. She managed to get me numb (the dentist I mean but Mrs F can achieve that too), though only because of the last visit I think she gave the LA time to work on this occasion. She carried out a large filling and I'm booked in for an extraction next time. However Mrs F thinks I should see someone else for that and I'm inclined to agree. This dentist doesn't inspire confidence, I get the feeling I'm being rushed all the time I'm there...
My dentist has gone private and one reason is to do with the amount of time 'expected' to be spent with a patient to make NHS cost effective for them.... He is an amazing man who is younger than me (unlikely to retire!) and he has really cured me of my phobia.... or rather I am not afraid to go and see him.... ? He has always taken his time with me, numbs before he injects, allows time for the magic to work, explains when I ask what is going on. We even laugh and joke ??
I have never had an issue with the juice not working Fishy.... Maybe they aren't using enough!!
I think you've hit the nail on the head there 4thPanda. More and more dentists will shy away from NHS work because the money is in expensive veneers and other cosmetic dentistry. I'm sure my dentist is using the minimum amount of LA she can get away with to make it cost effective.
However, about four years ago I had an extraction of a upper left pre-molar. Speaking as someone who was never particularly nervous of dentists, I can only describe the experience as sheer butchery and ever since I have suffered from neuralgia, due to associated nerve damage.
No consolation to me, but shortly after the dentist was admitted to a psychiatric hospital where he committed suicide.
I'm pleased to say that I'm now with a young lady dentist who I trust implicitly.....unfortunately during a recent visit, she tells me she's pregnant and will soon be taking maternity leave.

Joining this thread a tad late.

Well, it has to be said, nothing like a post from yours truly for killing a thread stone dead!
Oh David! What a story! I don't know if it's sad or brilliant or both!
