My mystery imposter may turn out to be a keeper Lady B.
Whilst my dahlias, zinnias and others have fallen foul of slugs/snails/leaf miners/aphids etc, the 'triffids' have grown strong and healthy without a blemish.
Watch this space to see if they're yellow or orange (hopefully next week)
Yes, aym, you can get pale yellow, darker yellow, I've got one called Indian Prince which is sort of pinkish orange with darker backs to the petals, and the usual orange ones. I never know what I'm going to get from one year to the nex!
This is my Calendula Indian Prince which has just opened. The colour is very vibrant and it needs to be as it's so dull here this morning. You's looks a very healthy specimen Kitty and I'm looking forward to seeing the eventual colour.
That's the prob with California poppies, they expand and flop everywhere and I can never keep up with the deadheading. I've got a cream one I really like, usually manage to get a couple coming up most years. Calendulas should go on flowering til Xmas if the weather's kind, depending where you live.

Thanks Lesley and hollie, with 3 of you in agreement on calendula/marigold it seems my mystery is solved.
Not something I would chose to grow but as they're here now I'll give em a chance to surprise me and turn out wonderful.
A* for ladybird for getting it right in round one

Thank you Kitty 2
TRIFFID UPDATE: They are 20" tall and have flower buds showing
I'm more than a little excited to see what they look like.
Wow they look lovely Kitty2. Can't wait to see them fully open now!
