caroline the weather forecast is for better warmer weather from sunday/Monday onwards. I'd wait a bit and harden them off for a while first. I love cosmos, they seem to go on flowering forever. I just had 25 Xanthos delivered and I can't wait to see the flowersimage

Just thinking out loud here...apparently you can tell what colour foxgloves with be ie. white ones have purely green foliage while natural/coloured have a reddish tinge.

Does this principle apply to cosmos? I have some young plants about 4 or 5 inches high. Some have reddish stems while others are pale green. They are sensation mixed image

I think it applies to lots of plants Fishyimage

Aquilegias, astrantias, mirabilis, antirrhinums for some.

Your question has caught my attention fishy, I've sown a mix too.

Hope someone out there can elaborate.

Nut has helped me out on this one before (lost the labels on my cosmos seedlings one year) - those with red/dark stems produce red or pink flowers, those with green stems produce white flowersimage

  • Verdun, I am just growing Cosmos for the first time.  When you say pinching back, do you mean just the growing tip or further down the stems?

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think...
