Do these bare root raspberry canes look acceptable?

Hi all

Sorry for another question so quickly!  It's the first time I've bought raspberry canes so - aside from pictures on the net - I had no idea what to expect.  I've ordered Chemainus and Polka, both of which looked as I expected....

....but I also ordered some Glen Ample and they look a bit on the measly sickly side!  However, being new to all of this and these being my first ever canes, I don't know if they are normal and will be fine when they get going.

I have already planted them out, but being a bit of a stresser I'm wondering whether they will come to anything.  If anyone can spare a moment, I'll put up some pics of the worst of the bunch for anyone with more experience than me (not difficult!) to have a look at.

As a side note, do I need to do anything to the canes to help protect them from the approaching cold weather or are they tough and hardy enough?

Many thanks

Max

Stop worrying about them. They might turn out to be great plants once they get going. You'll only know if they are weedy if they don't grow during the coming weeks. I have managed to get decent raspberries from things I have hoiked out of the grass on my allotment boundary......but then I didn't hand over wads of cash for those so any growth was a bonus.

Give them a soak in a bucket of water for a few hours and plant. If they do not grow well by September, complain to the supplier.

I bought 10 raspberry canes from garden centre and only 2 show signs of growth and a very knowledgeble neighbouring allotmenteer says they are hard to 'take', however, i 'stole' an old last year's cut off cane from a neighbour's pile of cast offs, cut it into six and used them as line markers for the spuds - 2 of them have struck and are looking healthy - who knew!

Well my experience is that out of 5 Autumn Bliss canes from Blackmoor last year, only two produced shoots, and this year out of 10 Polka canes from Keepers, only 6 are showing signs of growth. Both lots included some fairly scrappy looking canes, with not a lot of root. Several years ago I bought 3 potted Glen Coe plants from Marshalls and they all thrived, but the cost was high.

    Hi

I bought bare root rasps October 2014, Glen Ample and Autumn BLiss which came as a bundle and I also looked at them with horror and thought what the hell.

However planted both up straight away and last year got fruit from both types with the Autumn bliss later ones producing more fruit on that years growth.

So from a pack of tatter roots I do now have a good size raspberry beds which is thriving and I have managed to take successful cutting which are in pots

I would as already advised contact your supplier and discuss your concerns however I would also get them planted if they are not being replaced

I was very surprised at how hardy they are what came from some scrag ends of what I  received

    Happy gardening

Yes but how is one to know what is good or not if one has not previously bought canes? I have bought bare root fruit trees from Keepers, which were excellent, and a bare root blackcurrant which is fine, so they seem to be a good supplier.
