Thanks Steve301 & Rosemary51. The table is just under a window so I don't think light is the problem. Was going to pot them up today but got side tracked into planting out some substitute delphiniums and more lupins in the sunshine - only to have to rush in from heavy rain, thunder and lightening 5 mins later! Oh well, they'll have to sink or swim.
Even close to a window, there's a lot less light than outside. Remember these are tropical plants and need hgh light levels: the less time they spend indoors the better - from that point of view, at least.
"And when you do plant, sow a seed next to each one, as an insurance, and to extend the cropping season."
I don't understand this advice. The seeds aren't that cheap and this seems pretty wasteful. Why not just sow a few extra in pots to plant out if necessary - they transplant fine.
For extending the cropping season, wouldn't it be better to start some completely separate poles/wigwams with seeds sown later - trying to grow 2 plants per pole sounds like a recipe for overcrowding.

Okay Steve, I'll put them on the windowsill and take them off at night. Thanks.

Good point. Seems to work though, and they don't seem to mind being a bit crowded.
