My garden ruler says to space them 6" apart.

    ok, thanks guysimage

  • sorry Annie for the delay in replying.  Dog not been well.  I am in Surrey so further south than you but 15 degrees during the day and 8 to 10 at night should do it and also try and avoid cold wind as Verdun says.  I am not planning to plant mine out for another 3 weeks yet.

My runner beans are in loo rolls on the dining room table and already quite tall and waving - it's far too cold here in Bath to plant out yet but should I repot in bigger individual pots?

Your dining room sounds like mine, Lizzie image

Depth is what they need.  And when you do plant, sow a seed next to each one, as an insurance, and to extend the cropping season.

  • They sound as if they are not getting enough light.  Have you any room on a window sill?  If the roots are coming out of the bottom of the tubes I think I would probably try and pot them on.  What does everyone else think?

  • Thanks Verdun and Rosemary51.  They will be going into a raised bed  which is sheltered on two sides so I only have the other two to worry about and I would think they will be safe to go out at the end of May. Next year I will definitely delay sowing them until the end of April, I really wasn't prepared for them to grow this fast but they seem to be doing alright in the greenhouse.

Rosemary51 I hope your dog is on the mend now; it's no fun when they are poorly.

I'm going to sow mine within the next few days - probably in root trainers if I can find where I put them last year - if not they'll go in small pots - then they'll go in the little greenhouse.

My beans are just poking through the compost in the cold greenhouse too. I won't plant them out until the middle of May. That as a good tip about sowing a seed by the side of each plant.
