Dahlia rings
in Talkback
I have bought some metal rings on legs to put over the dahlias. The idea is that the ring (on legs) gives the dahlia support from the wind, as the plant grows through the metal ring. Has anyone else used this method? I would have used bamboo stakes but my OH insisted that these rings look nicer.

scroggin, how long pieces do you buy to make them, i've seen monty do them but can't remember how long they were, thanks
I'm interested too Scoggin, Bizzie Lizzie put a link on here ages ago showing how it was done but seem to have lost it. It was thousands of posts ago.
here's the link to montys clip on making them

Thank you Sanjy.

I've used similar things (semi circular but you can link them together to make hoops or to cover larger areas), generally around my oriental poppies, astrantia and assorted floppy plants to stop them from flopping onto the grass. Does the job very well although they're more effective if you get them in situ before the plants get going. They work better than my previous attempts of bamboo staking and blend in much more.
scroggin, where did you buy them? I've looked up steel stockholders, as Monty suggests in that clip, but all the websites are so... industrial, I suppose. Delivering by the tonne and such.
Oh, it sounds like we could have saved a few pounds if we had seen the Monty clip - and these shop bought rings are quite flimsy so we may be making our own next year, especially if the cat sits on them!
